Chinon is a significant red wine appellation from the Touraine district of the Loire. A small amount of white and rosé wines are also produced here. The vineyards extend south of the Loire on the banks of the Vienne. These are very old vineyards planted by the Romans. The town of Chinon, where Joan of Arc lived, was built during the Middle Ages and Rabelais, the 16th Century writer did much to promulgate the wines of Chinon. Domaine de la Colline is situated near the town of Huismes. The cellars are built in the tuffeau where conditions are ideal for ageing the wines.
